I have just learned about another new TV show dealing with genealogy.   PBS has a new genealogy series called Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates Jr. The series runs on Sundays, March 25 – May 20 at 8/7c.    Already run episodes are available for online viewing at http://video.pbs.org/program/finding-your-roots/ .

Personally, I really liked the Canadian series Ancestors in the Attic, except for the antics of the host, which he tamed down in the last several episodes.  The mysteries they worked with were from ordinary people, not from celebs or public figures with oodles of money to spend on research (if they paid at all).  This series was more helpful to the average genealogist as they worked through many ways to find information without it be laid out before them.  They explained what was available, how to access it and where to go next.

Who do you think you are? is  not bad, but then again celebs with all the research being done for them.  There is no real connection between the principle and the process.  The stories are good and the emotions are probably real.  I experience the thrill of discovery myself from time to time, but still have more questions than answers.

I switched from Gramps to UNCLEGed to create the data pages at HausHornung and did some tweaking with Kompozer.  I hope that the result is satisfactory.

Well, trying to add more detail and created the Family Tree pages.  Using the webpage reports created by Gramps, I figured out how to enter the HTML, but not how to create the individual links.  Working like this is not the same as uploading files to a web server for web pages.  There you just have to figure out where the files need to be placed.  Here you can't just go into file structure and upload.  Therefor, if you click on names, you will get the standard 404 error for now.

Time to look around a little bit more and see if

Due to financial constraints I will be abandoning my domain and trying out this format as an alternative.  As I learn more about it I will attempt to add other elements that go along with genealogy research, as they pertain to my ongoing efforts.

I have, for the same reason, not renewed my subscription to Ancestry.ca.

We'll see how this goes.  (see next post for reasons).
I took this theme as it reminded me of some of the sources that I have recently been using.  It has an old look to it and that is what appealed.

I have always been interested in History.  Genealogical research is an extension on that in trying to find out from where my ancestors came.  Harder to establish is why?

A prime example is Great-great-grandfather Isidor Hornung.
Born  June 21 1824 in Muggensturm he married Theresia Marggraf (Jan 21 1833) in Rastatt (?) Nov 21 1850.  Great-grandfather Karl Alois was born Sept 7 1856 in Rastatt.
then we have Isidor arriving in New York Nov 9 1868 - alone.  I have his death certificate showing him dying on Aug 24 1901, a resident of the Springside Home in New Haven, Connecticut.  His only census appearance is from that year but he does show up in several city directories between 1860 and 1900.   Conversely, Theresia appears in the city directories of Karlsruhe, Germany in 1866 and 1877.

Why would he abandon his family for thirty years? Did he correspond with his family?  He had a trade -woodlathe operator- so why did the family not join him?
